| Last mountains before the desert,
Jebel Sahro is still walked by the Aït Atta nomads, former
warriors (they were the last tribe to submit after the deadly
battle of Bougafer in 1934), who find a meagre living in its deserted
and harsh lands. When many Aït Atta settled and mixed with
the population they formerly ruled, some of them stuck to their
traditional way of life.
Pastor, they live mainly from the breeding of goats, and use
mule to carry their small possessions. They still make transhumance,
between mountains in the summer and desert in the winter, when
they go down to Zagora. You can even trek with them and accompany
the transhumance. It has nowadays evolved, and some nomads use
special trucks that takes them to the Fès area, where they
work for the harvest while their herds can feed on the rests of
the crop.
You need a 4*4 to cross the Sahro. You’ll feel out of time,
out of space even, in a foreign, beautiful and hard environment.
